A Visualization Tweak that May Help You Reach Your Goals Faster

December 07, 2017

This post isn’t going to be about content, but there’s a lot more to life than blogs and web pages, right? If you need a content fix, go take a look at this post about micromanaging your content, or this one about old-school copywriting and your content.

Today, I want to write a bit about the concept of visualization and how it can help you reach your goals faster. Specifically, I want to tell you about a tweak you can make to the conventional visualization process that will make those goals a reality even sooner.

It’s Old News By Now

Visualization is a process by which you picture yourself achieving your goals, as if they have already happened. The concept is that visualizing yourself having already achieved the goal will help guide you toward the actions (law of attraction) that will make them a reality.

Visualization has been a popular topic of discussion for quite some time. I even found an article from 2009 in Psychology Today about it. Athletes like Tiger Woods are big on visualization, and most of the heavyweights in the personal growth / self-improvement niche like Tony Robbins and Bob Proctor swear by it.

So, this isn’t a post about whether using various forms of visualization can be effective. It’s been proven effective time and time again. I want to offer a modification on the way many people perform visualization exercises that may make the process a lot more powerful.

Where the Disconnection Occurs

When a guided visualization takes place, you are often told to “imagine yourself” or “see yourself” in the situation or lifestyle you want. It may be jetting around the globe to exotic locales, relaxing on your luxury yacht in the Florida Keys, or driving a golf ball 350 yards.

And while the instructions will usually speak about feelings and intensity to help set the wheels in motion, the way you perform the exercise causes a disconnection that isn’t allowing you to get the most out of the exercise.

Don’t Just See Yourself Doing It

How many times have you performed a visualization exercise and made it into a movie in your head, where you are watching yourself being successful and realizing your dreams? Or you are kind of hovering above, looking down at that future you and the lifestyle you crave?

It sounds like a great way to kick the law of attraction into high gear, but are you really engaging all of your senses with this method? Are you really feeling the intensity? Because remember, it’s all about feeling when you’re doing visualization.

Here’s what I want you to try the next time you visualize, to instantly engage all of your senses and get the most out of the exercise.

Remember this phrase: Don’t just “See” yourself doing it; “Be” yourself doing it.

What the “F” does that mean? Basically, it means that instead of seeing yourself from above or anywhere else, visualize looking out your own eyes during the exercise. Transport yourself down and into your own body so you can actually feel the breeze on your face, taste the $500 bottle of wine, or feel the vibration of the ball coming off your club.

Engaging All Your Senses

My partner wife boss doesn’t usually let me talk about the “how” of things, but in this case the how is what makes it all come together. When you enter your own body and see out of your own eyes during visualization, you will engage all of your senses more intensely than by simply watching it as a third person.

You gotta feel it and not just see it, and while most of the visualization experts probably intend for you to feel it and want you to get all that intensity, they don’t seem to make that distinction of “be yourself doing it.”

If you’ve been watching yourself realize all your dreams as if you were in a movie, try hopping into your own body and experience what it will be like for real. It might take a bit of practice to stay in there, and you might feel as though you are slipping out at first, but stick with it.

Before long, you will be able to visualize your own success with all the intensity that would be there if it were happening for real; and then all of a sudden it will be.
